Copy specific Provenance: Anderson (16th/17th century), possible provenance - see Annotations; Thomas Corser (1793-1876). Manuscript inscription at head of front flyleaf "from Corser's sale 6th portion 1871 no. 633". Listed as lot 633 "very scarce, the margin cut off the first leaf of dedication, slightly injuring the letter-press, calf" in 'Catalogue of the seventh portion of the valuable & extensive library of the Rev. Thomas Corser ... Monday the 10th July 1871, and two days following' (London: Sotheby's, 1871) - sold for £1.7.0 according to priced up copy of the sale catalogue digitised by HATHI Trust: http://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/011566516 ; acquired by unknown member of Bright, Thompson and Yates families at some point from 1800s to 1940s - exact provenance unknown; Allan Heywood Bright (1862-1941): bookplate on front pastedown ; University of Glasgow: lot 196 in "Yates, Thompson and Bright: a family of bibliophiles Wednesday 16 July 2014" (London: Christie's, 2014) (nb. where authorship is erroneously attributed to Thomas Willet).
Annotations: 16th/17th century annotations (pen trials?) running vertically down the fore-edge of a number of leaves, washed but visible under ultra-violet light: on A3r - several practice letter As, "antiquitatem anti", "Anderson est contra om[nia?]", "Dickus" and several other pen trials. On A3v biblical quotations (Luke 11:23; Matthew 12:30) "He that is not with me is against me". Similarly on A4r, "He that is not with me is against me not to dwell any longer upon this point". A different biblical quotation on A4v (John 1:40), "Andrew Simon Peters brother". And in the same hand on B3r, "Andrew Willet the Author hereof". Further unread annotations on B1r and B2r; 19th century pencil annotation on verso of front free endpaper, "A copy sold at Britwell [i.e. library of Britwell Court - see Praz] July 1924 for £230"; various booksellers' marks? in pencil on front pastedown, "F4 G5". And on the verso of the front free endpaper, "[?] 19/4/95" and "£12 rare" plus a further unread deleted pencil inscription at the head of the page. Rear free endpaper, "col. AD/BQ".
Binding: 19th century brown calf, single gold-tooled fillet border; gold-tooled spine decoration with title in gilt on black morocco label; gilt roll board edges; marbled endpapers; leaves A2 and L2 repaired.
